The Friouato Cave.. The home of legends
Morocco is the paradise of speleologists, and there are many places in Morocco that will certainly get your attention. Let's remind you that Morocco contains more than 1000 caves discovered so far, but the most famous cave, which its name is attached to mythologies and strange stories, is the “Friouato cave”.
The Friouato cave is located 28 km in the south of the of Taza, a historic city in the north-central of Morocco, and it’s composed of a lot of underground lanes and mazes. The cave has three main entrances, the farthest explored known point is about 272 meters, but its real limits are still mysterious, however, there are also signs of an underground river.
The cave was explored for the first time in 1935, the name of “Friouato” means in Amazigh the cave of wind and it’s considered among the biggest caves in the world.
Although that we don’t really know the point of the end of the Friouato cave, but some popular local stories claim that the path of the cave ends in the lake of Isli and Tislit in the region of Imilchil in the Atlas Mountains.
Alongside with the cave of Friouatou, there is more than 125 cave known in the region of Taza so far. The region of Taza which occupies the corridor between the Rif Mountains and Middle Atlas mountains it's the capital of speleology in Morocco.
The Friouato cave is really worth to be visited as a speleologist or interested in this filed, but it’s too necessary to have a local guide and commit to the instructions of the guide, because the Friouato cave is also one of the most dangerous caves in the world, and because your safety is always the priority.
