The cave of Hercules. Morocco myth

There are a lot of mythical places in Morocco, where the legend and the reality mix up, one of these places is the legendary cave of Hercules at Tangier, an inspiring place that tempts the lovers of history and fiction to come and visit it.

The legend says that Africa was connected to Europe, separating the Mediterranean region from the Atlantic Ocean, and at a moment of anger, the famous Greek hero Hercules hit the mountain, so it split up to allow the mix of the blue waters of the Mediterranean with Atlantic waters, and then, Africa and Europe became two different continents.

Hercules -according to a second Greek myth- was imprisoned in the cave which took his name, and one day he decided to escape, by hitting the wall, so he had made a huge hole, but because of this hit, not only the hole was made, but also the two continents were separated, of course, it’s nothing than a myth, but the amazing thing, that the hole of the cave, looks quite like a map of Africa!

The Hercules cave is located in the city of Tangier, precisely near a hill that the people of the region call "Ras Spartel" or “Cap Spartel”. The cave was discovered for the first time in 1906, and since then, the cave of Hercules became one of the first destinations for tourists coming from all over the world, especially those who like the magic of myths and enjoy the view of the convergence of the Mediterranean waves with the currents of the Atlantic.
