Jamaa Elfna Square.. The heart of Marrakech
It is the most famous place not only in Marrakech but in the whole of Morocco. Indeed, it is Jamaa Elfna Square, the iconic place of Marrakech, and the human and cultural crossroads, the place that never sleeps, and gathers all the beauty and the magic of the red city.
Jamaa Elfna Square is a very ancient place, and let me tell you that this place is one of the most ancient squares in the world! Surely before Times Square in New York or even Red Square in Moscow and Tiananmen Square in Beijing!
The date of foundation of Jamaa Elfna Square goes back in time to 958 years ago, in the time of the creation of Marrakech as an independent city and capital of Morocco, in the rule of the Almoravides dynasty; in the beginning, it was an area for trade, it was also used to parade the armies before going to the war.
In fact, Jamaa Elfna Square has two faces, the first, is the day face; the Square is a big area for performances, taming the snakes and monkeys, popular arts, the Hena tattoo, and other activities…, in the night, Jamaa Elfna Square turns to the biggest restaurant at open-air in the world, you can find some of the most delicious Moroccan dishes.
Triangular in shape, Jemaa El Fna Square is located southwest of the medina (historic old town) of Marrakech. It especially overlooks the souks of the city and the Koutoubia Mosque.
And to conclude, Jemaa El Fna is included in the list of intangible human heritage declared by UNESCO in 2001.
